Beer-swilling pigs

ian
I couldn't let our community not enjoy this story out of Australia. The article is geared towards an activist groups displeasure with the bar, but in all honesty, how cool is it that these pigs drink beer? Read the article here

Happy Birthday Dr. Gonzo

ian
"I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity but they've always worked for me" - The late, great, Hunter S. Thompson.

Yesterday was Hunter S. Thompson's birthday, co-founder and co-conspirator of Flying Dog Ales out of Denver, CO. He is widely held as an esteemed political activist, journalist, and author.

In his honor, Flying Dog have produced their Gonzo Imperial Porter, which you can read the review of here

This is the email distributed by Flying Dog yesterday:

Dear Flying Dog Nation,

Today, July 18, 2006 is the birthday of our co-conspirator and fellow instigator, Hunter S. Thompson.

Our package designer, longtime friend and artist of Hunter's books, Ralph Steadman, said this of Dr. Gonzo after his death:

"...He told me 25 years ago that he would feel real trapped if he didn't know that he could commit suicide at any moment. I don't know if that is brave or stupid or what, but it was inevitable. I think that the truth of what rings through all his writing is that he meant what he said. If that is entertainment to you, well, that's OK. If you think that it enlightened you, well, that's even better. If you wonder if he's gone to Heaven or Hell -rest assured he will check out them both, find out which one Richard Milhous Nixon went to -and go there. He could never stand being bored. But there must be Football too -and Peacocks..."

So today, we toast and remember Hunter S. Thompson. Hopefully he is somewhere having a beer and stirring shit up.

We encourage you to learn more about this great American Political Activicst, Journalist and Author. A good place to start is here

Heineken Beer Bottle Bricks

sean

Say it aint so. If you haven't seen this, you have to check it out.

The Story is short, so I have just added it here...

This 1950s design for stackable beer bottles was the brainchild of Alfred Heineken.

As the story goes, Heineken was strolling along by the sea in Jamaica, and was shocked at the number of beer bottles littering the beach. He was also concerned with the lack of cheap building materials, and at the resulting living conditions for the poor. Putting two and two together, he envisioned a “World Bottle” which would be imported for drinking but kept for construction.

A 10’ x 10’ shack would take approximately 1000 bottles to build, but the Jamaican tourist industry would likely supply plenty. In addition, glass (and air) are good insulators, though the humid and hot Jamaican climate may not require insulation per se.

A unique feature was that the short bottle neck would fit into a depression in the bottom of each bottle. Ultimately though, the idea was either (according to different accounts) voted down by the Heineken board, or vetoed by the bottle companies and the customers. Not much information is available on the World Bottle today, but there have been other attempts to make interlocking “bottle bricks”, even of plastic.
